Newsletter No. 36
Friday 16th June 2006

Dear Parents, Carers and Governors,

Happy Birthday, Your Majesty!
To celebrate The Queen's official 80th birthday tomorrow, the PTA have kindly given every child a "80th Birthday Medal". The medal is displayed in a special case, with our school named printed on. It is very special gift, which I hope the children will treasure. (How many of us still have our Silver Jubilee medal from our school?) Many thanks to the PTA for funding this for the children.

Year Two Parent Questionnaire
Year Two children will be bringing home a questionnaire for parents to fill in today. We would like to find out how you have felt about your child's education whilst they have been here. We are always looking for ways to improve and would welcome any ideas, suggestions or comments you have.
Please complete and return by Friday 30th June. We will study the responses and report back to you before the end of term.

Marwell Zoo Trip
Thanks for all the parents who have returned their forms so far. We can't take any child without their form - please see Mrs martin if you need another copy.

Arts Week
Many thanks to everyone who came in to help us this week - we've been dancing, weaving, painting, modelling - all week! A particular thanks to our musicians who have played in assembly for us this week, Mrs Pritchard, Mrs Rodgers, Ulrike and Mrs Goddard. Thanks to Mrs Keelan for showing us her beautiful art work. The staff have spent a lot of take planning and preparing for this week, so a huge thanks to them, as always.

We wish to invite all parents, friends, children etc, to pop in and see the artwork created at the Community Art Club on Thursday 22nd June 3.30 - 5.30. We have invited dignitaries from Wokingham District Council and the local press.

These are going well, there's still lots of time to get them, £2 a pair - pop into the office and get your "Doing it" sock.

Polehampton Day - Twyford Advertiser
It was great to see our 'Polehampton Day' reported in this week's local paper. The children are still talking about, and it's in the diary again for next year.

Year Two Buddies
The year two children who are moving on to our junior school had a very good visit yesterday, meeting their buddies, getting tour of the school, staying for playtime and assembly. A great taster of things to come.

PTA disco
There will be a full house tonight for the children's disco - no tickets will be available on the door, so please don't come unless you have bought a ticket in advance.

Happy Hours Position

Twyford and District Play Association
The Twyford and District Play Association's Playscheme runs in the mornings for four weeks during the school summer holidays. It is open to children between the ages of 5 and 13. This year the younger children will be based in the Twyford & Ruscombe Preschool (our usual venue of the scout hut having sadly been lost to us for the time being) and the older children (from age 8 upwards) will be based in the Youth and Community Centre. For outdoor activities we are able to access the Polehampton Junior School grounds. Our aim is to provide a safe, stimulating and fun environment for the children to meet up with their friends during those long school holidays, and to make new friends. Our staffed are local childcare professionals and young people, all of who are keen to share their enthusiasm and talents to keep the children entertained. There are lots of activities on offer everyday; arts and crafts, table tennis, football, rounders, karaoke and bouncy castle to name a few. We also have visiting entertainers such as the Circus School. We are a charity run by a committee of volunteers. The scheme is self funding and we rely on fund raising events and donations from the local Parish Councils and businesses, whose continued generosity and support enables us to keep our fees low. There is a one off registration fee of £2.50 per child and £2.50 for each morning session. This year the scheme will run from 31st July to 25th August and information about registration dates will be circulated to local schools during the summer term.

This year we will be celebrating 25 years since the Playscheme started as a local community initiative, and it continues to be a community service to this day. We are planning some exciting activities for this summer to mark the occasion of our Silver Jubilee and will be kicking off these celebrations with an open day at the Youth and Community Centre on Sunday, 18th June. This will be a great opportunity for anyone who is unfamiliar with the scheme to bring along the children to see what we have to offer. We would also love to hear from anyone who attended the scheme all those years ago (and maybe has children who have attended too) or anyone who worked there in the past. If anyone has any photographs from previous years that they would like to share with us, please do give me a call on 0118 901 6456.

Appeal for the Children of Chernobyl
Everyone has heard of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, but few realise its scale or the ongoing consequences for the children who live in Belarus and Ukraine. The Chernobyl Children Lifeline gives help to children in Belarus and offers them recuperative visits to the UK staying with host families.

This summer, we are bringing a group of 12 children and a group leader from Belarus to the UK. Not only does the visit give the children an opportunity to experience going to the zoo, to London, and swimming, but it enables them to receive medical and dental treatment. At home they live on food grown on polluted land but whilst here they are well fed by their host families. This prolongs their lives by a truly significant amount of time. A check carried out in 2000 on children who arrived in the UK with sky-high heavy metal levels, which can cause many health problems, showed on returning home to Belarus that the levels had dropped by 40%.

We put children in pairs with hosts for either two or four weeks. The visit has been arranged from Sunday 9th July to Sunday 6th August. We have placed five pairs of children in families but we are desperately looking for hosts for the remaining two boys. Can you find room in your home for these children? It really is an amazing experience! You will never be unsupported: the group leader interprets for them, there is a very active and varied programme, and we have a capable and enthusiastic committee. If you would like to help the children by hosting, please contact the Chairman, Maria Gee, on 0118 962 7721.
